Why we have them.

Undocumented migrants are often targets of crime. This may be property or violent crimes and sexual offenses. Police should be called in to action in these cases.

The problem with what Trump demands it is would destroy local trust in their own police. Many departments including Chicago, passed regulations that direct police to NOT ask for legal status. This is what’s the corrupt DOJ is trying to break.

There is reason for these laws that have to do with the responsibility of local law enforcement vs ICEcapades. If the victim of a crime is undocumented they will hesitate to call local police for help or to report a crime. This “don’t ask” policy provides for a degree of safety where local police should become involved.

Absent this protection, criminals will and do deliberately target immigrant populations believing the won’t call police.

They become targets for theft, robbery, sexual assaults and so on. In cases of domestic abuse a battered wife/girlfriend will not call for help in cases of a violent domestic situation.

What right wing idiots call “sanctuary” local officials call protecting their own cities first. If a population is fearful of police, crimes increase
